Guild Mortgage Company to Pay $24.9 Million to Resolve Allegations it Knowingly Caused False Claims for Federal Mortgage insurance

Guild Mortgage Company has agreed to pay the United States $24.9 million to resolve allegations that it violated the False Claims Act. The company allegedly knowingly breached program requirements when it underwrote mortgages insured by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The lawsuit was filed by a whistleblower, the former heard of quality control at Guild Mortgage Company. The whistleblower will receive almost $5 million for his share of the recovery. Memphis Physicians Agree to Pay More Than $340,000 for Alleged Overbilling

A group of Memphis physicians have agreed to pay $341,690 to resolve allegations that they violated the False Claims Act by knowingly charging Medicare for services rendered by Nurse Practitioners at the higher reimbursement rate reserved for physicians. Medicare pays a higher rate for physician services than for non-physician services. The settlement resolves allegations brought by a whistleblower under the qui tam provision of the False Claims Act. The whistleblower will receive $58,087 for his share of the recovery. To read the full story, click here.

 

Fiat Chrysler Agrees to Pay $9.5 Million Penalty for Disclosure Violations

The SEC announced that Fiat Chrysler has agreed to settle charges that it made misleading disclosures about an internal audit of its emissions control systems. Fiat Chrysler reported in an annual report that it had conducted an internal audit which confirmed that their vehicles complied with regulations concerning emissions. The SEC found that Fiat Chrysler’s internal audit was limited and that they did not conduct a comprehensive review of their compliance with U.S. emissions regulations.
